For Bars & Nightclubs

Tabs, tips, taps — POS that keeps up with the rush.

Square for Restaurants in bar mode: pre-auth tabs, last-call enforcement, fast-pour modifiers, KDS for the kitchen, and tip-pool reporting that doesn't take all night.

  • Pre-auth open tabs with a card on file
  • Bartender / server tip-pool rules
  • ID-prompt at checkout for age-restricted SKUs

What we hear from operators

The four problems we solve first

01

Walk-out tabs are stolen revenue

Pre-authorize the card when the tab opens — Square stores the auth and applies the final amount on close. Walk-outs don't kill your night.

02

Tip pooling math eats your closing

Configure pool rules per shift, station, or tipped role; Square produces the report your bookkeeper needs and Square Payroll consumes it directly.

03

Speed at the rail decides revenue

Fast-pour favorites, drink modifiers (rocks, neat, splash), and one-tap rebuying — Square for Restaurants is built for the 11pm push, not retrofit from a generic POS.

04

Compliance isn't optional

Configure age-restricted SKUs to hard-prompt the bartender, last-call shut-off windows, and manager-approval rules for comps and voids. Defensible logs for the ABC inspector.

The Square Stack

The exact Square products that fit your business

SugarPay deploys, configures, and supports each of these — billed through Square, activated and trained by us.

  • Square for Restaurants — Bar Mode

Pre-auth tabs, fast-pour favorites, drink modifiers, splits, comps, voids, manager overrides, and floor maps for the back patio.

  • Square KDS for kitchen orders

When the kitchen runs late-night menu, KDS routes by station, tracks ticket times, and keeps food coming out the window during the rush.

  • Card on File for tabs

Open tabs with a card pre-auth; close them tap-to-pay or split in seconds. No more chasing wallets at 1:45 am.

  • Square Payroll for Tipped Employees

Designed for tip pools, hourly + tip splits, and the IRS reporting that comes with tipped staff (Form 8027 if applicable).

  • Square Loyalty + Marketing

Punch-card-style loyalty ("buy 9 cocktails, get 1"), birthday promotions, and segmented re-engagement ("haven't seen you since the holiday").

  • Square Banking + Loans

Same-day payouts to a Square Checking account; Square Loan offers based on processing volume — useful for inventory before a music-fest weekend.

Pay-at-the-table for cocktail seating and the patio. Wi-Fi or LTE so it doesn't drop when the house is full.

Backup

Star / Epson kitchen printer

Paper backup for stations that prefer it; routes from Square Restaurants automatically.

Switching from

Why operators move to SugarPay + Square

vs. Toast

Toast's POS is excellent for restaurants but its merchant pricing is opaque and contracts are typically 2–3 years. Square + SugarPay is month-to-month, transparent rack rates (or 0% with Duet), with the same fast-rail tooling.

vs. SpotOn

SpotOn is a serious bar contender but pricing is rep-negotiated and its full-stack pull-in is uneven. Square is one ecosystem (POS + online + loyalty + banking + payroll) with SugarPay's pricing flexibility.

vs. Arryved

Strong at craft beer / brewery taprooms — but limited outside that niche, and you give up the broader Square ecosystem (online ordering, banking, loans).

vs. Aloha / TouchBistro

Legacy POS with on-prem servers and per-terminal licensing. Square is cloud-native, mobile-first, and updates ship continuously. No back-office server to babysit on a Saturday night.

Vertical FAQ

The questions bars / nightclubs operators ask first

Can it pre-auth open tabs?

Yes — when a tab opens with a card, Square stores the pre-auth and applies the final amount on close. Walk-outs become rare and the math at close-out is automatic.

Will it handle tip pools and splits?

Yes. Configure pool rules per shift, station, or role (bartenders, barbacks, servers). Square produces the report your bookkeeper needs and Square Payroll integrates the splits into paychecks.

What about ID checks at the bar?

Configure age-restricted SKUs to hard-prompt the bartender — no override without a manager code. Reports give you a defensible log for the ABC.

Will the tablet survive a wet bar?

The Register and Stand hardware is rated for the bar environment; for the rail, we typically recommend the Register Plus over an iPad. Cases and screen protectors are available.

Does it support multi-tap, kegs, and inventory by ounce?

Square for Retail tracks SKUs and case packs cleanly. For deeply specialized keg-line / pour-tracking, third-party integrations (BevSpot, Backbar) sit on top of Square — we set those up at onboarding.
