For Salons, Spas & Appointment-Based

Book it. Sell it. Keep it.

Square Appointments + Square for Retail in one tightly stitched stack: online booking, deposits, retail upsell, stylist commission tracking, and processing rates that don't punish a $35 cut.

  • Square Appointments — online booking, deposits, no-show fees
  • Card on File for repeat clients & memberships
  • Cash discount keeps card fees off small tickets

What we hear from operators

The four problems we solve first

01

No-shows steal your day

A missed 90-minute color is $200+ of revenue — gone. Square Appointments takes a deposit at booking (configurable %), saves the card on file, and enforces your cancellation window automatically.

02

Retail and service shouldn't be two systems

Sell shampoo at the chair, ring it on the same ticket as the cut, and have inventory + commission update in one place. Square Appointments + Square for Retail share one catalog, one customer, one report.

03

Stylist commission tracking is a nightmare

Booth-renters, employees on commission, hybrid splits, retail commission separate from service — Square handles each rule per staff member, and Square Payroll consumes it directly.

04

Card fees on small tickets are brutal

$0.10 per swipe is 0.7% of a $14 brow wax before you add the percentage. Duet cash discount keeps the listed price as the card price and discounts cash — your effective processing cost approaches 0%.

The Square Stack

The exact Square products that fit your business

SugarPay deploys, configures, and supports each of these — billed through Square, activated and trained by us.

  • Square Appointments

Online booking from your site, Google, and Instagram. Deposits, automated reminders, waitlists, recurring appointments, group bookings, and a multi-staff calendar with per-staff hours and services.

  • Square Card on File

Securely tokenized cards for memberships, packages, no-show fees, and one-tap rebookings. Card data lives in Square's PCI environment — never on your phone or laptop.

  • Square for Retail

Inventory, low-stock alerts, vendor management, and barcode-driven receiving for the retail shelves at the front of the house.

  • Square Loyalty + Gift Cards

Punch-card-style loyalty for repeat services, branded digital and physical gift cards, and the holiday gift-card boost most salons make 30% of December revenue from.

  • Square Marketing

Automated win-back campaigns ("haven't seen Sarah in 8 weeks"), birthday promos, and segmented email/SMS — all from your real client list.

  • Square Payroll for Tipped Employees

Designed for commission + tip splits, contractor 1099s for booth renters, and benefits administration for salons that want them.

Recommended Hardware

Your kit, decided in five minutes

We'll size the bundle to your footprint and ticket volume. Square Hardware financing is available to spread the spend.

Front desk

Square Stand

iPad-based all-in-one for check-in, check-out, retail, and tip prompts. Clean enough to live on a styled front desk.

Chair-side

Square Terminal (handheld)

Hand the device to the client at the chair for tip & sign — feels like fine-dining tableside, but for a haircut.

Booth renters & mobile stylists

Square Reader for contactless + chip

Pocket-sized for booth renters who want their own ring-up flow without buying a full stand.

Retail

Brother / Dymo label printer

For barcoded retail bottles, sample tags, and gift-card sleeves at the front.

Switching from

Why operators move to SugarPay + Square

vs. Booksy

Booksy's marketplace charges 3.49% + 30¢ on processing AND a per-booking marketplace fee on top. Square Appointments has no marketplace fee — you keep your client list and your customer relationship.

vs. Vagaro

Vagaro is appointment-first but retail and reporting feel bolted on. Square gives you a unified ticket (service + retail), unified inventory, and unified reporting — from the same vendor.

vs. Mindbody

Mindbody is built for class-based fitness and large multi-location wellness — overkill (and overpriced) for most salons. Square Appointments is faster to learn, cheaper to operate, and has a real POS attached.

vs. GlossGenius / Fresha

Solid stylist-first booking apps, but limited inventory, weak retail attach, and processing rates set unilaterally. With Square + SugarPay, you choose the processing model (Standard or 0% Duet) and own the merchant relationship.

Detailed comparison pages and migration guides are on the way. In the meantime, tell us your current processor and we'll model the actual savings against your sales.

Vertical FAQ

The questions salons & spas operators ask first

Can clients book online, on Instagram, and via Google?

Yes. Square Appointments gives you a hosted booking site, an embed for your existing site, an Instagram "Book" button, and the integration that powers Reserve with Google. Same calendar, all channels.

How do deposits and no-show fees work?

Configure a flat amount or % deposit per service, a cancellation window, and an automatic no-show fee against the card on file. Clients agree to the policy at booking; Square enforces it without you needing to.

Can I track commission per stylist, separate retail vs. service?

Yes — set commission rate per staff member, with separate rules for service vs. retail, and Square produces a report that flows directly into Square Payroll or your existing payroll provider.

Will Dual Pricing work in my state for personal services?

Cash discount programs are broadly permitted across the U.S. — your listed price stays the card price; cash clients get an automatic discount at checkout. We configure on-screen disclosure and receipt language for your jurisdiction at onboarding.

What about booth renters who run their own books?

Booth renters can each have their own Square account (we set them up), or share a single account with separate staff calendars. Either way, processing flows to the right person and the right 1099.
